Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs) - Side Effects of Taking TCA drugs

Like other drugs, there are many side effects of taking Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs). In general low doses of TCAs would be prescribed initially, and then increased every 3 to 7 days, according how well that are tolerated, until the minimum side-effects reached. The elderly are more suspectable to side-effects(particularly sleepiness and low blood pressure), so the doses should be increased more slowly.

  • dry mouth
  • constipation
  • blurred vision
  • sweating
  • urinary retention

The elderly may suffer dizziness. Less common, but more serious, side effects Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs) include arrhythmia and heart block, which in rare cases, where someone has pre-existing heart disease, can cause sudden death. Convulsions are another rare side effect, which is why Tricyclic Antidepressants drugs are avoided for those with epilepsy. If the person you love is worries about side effects, then encourage them to discuss this with their doctor.
