Helping someone with Post Natal Depression (PND)

If you think someone you love could be suffering from post-natal depression then it is important to get medical help. She may find it useful it you attend a doctor's appointment with her. Here are other ways you could help a person with post natal depression -

  • If it is your partner, tell her you love her - she probably feels very vulnerable and unlovable at the moment.
  • Try to understand what she is going through - having a baby is huge event for a women and a big change in her life. However much the baby is wanted, there are still adjustments to be made.
  • Encourage her to talk about how she feels, not just to you and to a doctor, but also to friends.
  • Ask how you can help - could you take on more domestic responsibilities to share the workload for a bit?
  • Listen to others - friends and other members of the family who voice their concerns to you about your partner with post natal depression.
  • Make sure she has proper, regular time off from the baby so she can have a long soak in the bath, go shopping, see a friend or do something she wants to do by you taking full charge of the baby.
  • Pay attention to her as well as to the baby.
  • Don't nag or point out the things around the house that have not been done. Don't criticize her as a ability as a mother, realize that this can be a symptom of the post natal depression disorder.
  • Suggest other sources of support such as a self-help group - taking to other mums who feel the same way - or contacting specialist organization such as the Association of Postnatal Illness.
