Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs)

This group of drugs works on the same neurotransmitters as the TCAs but in a different way. Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are used far less frequently than the TCAs and SSRIs because of their increased likelihood of adverse interactions with other drugs. Examples of MAOIs include -

  • phenelzine
  • isocarboxazid
  • tranylcypromine

How Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) works ?

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) work by preventing the synapse from recycling or degrading the neurotransmitter - monoamine oxidase is just the name of the enzyme involved in the degrading process. Again, this means that more of the neurotransmitter remains in the synapse to ensure it stimulates the second, and so on.

Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) Information Facts and Side Effects

This type of drugs tend to have more side-effects than TCAs, and so they are usually prescribed if other types of antidepressants have failed. In cases of severe depression, Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) may be less effective.
