Dementia

Dementia

Dementia is not a single disease. It describes a collection of symptoms that develop in association with a number of progressive diseases of the brain. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of Dementia. Other, less common forms of Dementia include multi-infarct Dementia, lewy body Dementia and pick's disease.

The key features of Dementia are a continuing decline in a person's memory, and ability to learn and understand. Usually there are also changes in social behavior and general motivation and in the ability to control emotions. One important point is that not only memory is affected. Although in the early stages of Dementia memory problems may seem the most obvious sign, many older people experience a decline in their memory that does not develop into Dementia.

Dementia is common among elderly people. Both men and women may develop Dementia.

What are the causes of Dementia

There are a number of factors that may increase the chance of a person developing Dementia. These include -

  • increasing age
  • past head injury
  • down's syndrome
  • history of parkinson's disease in the family
  • high blood pressure
  • heart disease
  • smoking

Dementia Treatment and cure

The treatment for a person with Dementia depends on the precise diagnosis. A number of new drugs known as acetylcholinesterase inhibitors are available for treatment.
