Bulimia Nervosa

People with Bulimia Nervosa usually maintain a near-normal body weight, but their sense of themselves is unduly influenced by body shape and weight. As a way of dealing with what they perceive are unacceptable feelings such as insecurity. anger or sadness. They have a preoccupation with craving for food and also feel unable to control their eating during these binges.

As Bulimia Nervosa is more easily kept a secret than anorexia, the family are often unaware of the problems. Devious, deceptive behavior and mood swings are common. The repeated vomiting causes distressing physical effects - eroded enamel on teeth, stomach pains, dehydration and lethargy.

People with Bulimia Nervosa often know the harm they causing themselves and want to change but at the same time feel powerless to do so due to their fear of weight gain.

Bulimia Nervosa Treatment

Bulimia Nervosa treatment is usually as an outpatient on a one to one basis with a therapist trained in brief psychotherapy. Group therapy can also be helpful. The therapy could be cognitive behavioral therapy , interpersonal therapy or a combination of these.

Self help manuals without any therapist involvement may also be useful in the treatment of Bulimia Nervosa.
