Grief, Sadness and Depression

Grief and depression are different. It is possible to grieve without being depressed., but many of the feelings are similar. About 33 percent of bereaved people have a depressive illness one month after the loss, and 15 percent are still depressed a year later. Symptoms suggests a bereaved person is also depressed include -

  • intense feelings of guilt not related to the bereavement
  • thoughts of suicide
  • feeling of worthlessness
  • markedly slow speech and movements

Sadness and Grief are normal reaction to a life event involving loss or change. This condition is described as normal because ordinarily that person adjusts and recovers after a period of mourning. The recovery time is influenced by the severity of loss. There nay be some temporary physical changes to sleep patterns and thinking patterns.
