Therapies for Depression Treatment

There are hundreds of different complementary or alternative therapies used in treatment of depression, ranging from those now considered to be mainstream such as homeopathy and acupuncture - to more alternative therapies such as Reiki.

Different types of complementary therapies

Complementary Therapies that may be useful in alleviating anxiety, depression or stress include -

Acupuncture

Acupuncture is an ancient Chinese therapy widely used in mainstream chinese medicine. An acupuncturist uses needles to stimulate particular points on the meridians (invisible channels) in the body. According to the principles behind Acupuncture, energy is thought to flow along these channels to and from our various organs, maintaining emotional, physical and mental well being. If the flow of energy is disrupted because of an emotional upset or illness like depression can result.

Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is the use of aromatic essential oils extracted from different plants. Each oil is said to have unique properties, which can be used to relax, soothe, energize or re balance the body, while other oils are noted for their healing ability. The oils can be used in different ways - for example in the bath, as a massage oil, or as an inhalation.

Homeopathy

The basic idea of homeopathy is to try to stimulate the body's own healing potential by trying to cure like with like - administrating a minute, diluted dose of a substance that is large dose in a well person would mimic the symptoms of the disease the practitioner is aiming to relieve.

Massage

This forms the basis of many therapies. A relaxing can help float minor tensions.

Visualization
