In general it is thought that depression is twice as common in women than men, although it is not fully understood why. In children depression seems to affect equal number of boys and girls, but the rates change after puberty. We already know that women are more likely than men to suffer mood swings as a normal part of the menstrual cycle - and some women do have their first experience of depression within a few months of giving birth.

But other gender factors can play a part in Depression in women too - sociologists point to greater stress women are often under because of the demands of the conflict between their traditional role as wife and mother and pressure to work or the desire to have a career as well.
