Counselling for Depression Treatment

There has been a huge interest in Counselling and psychotherapy in the past 20 years, and many people who have depression have found it enormously useful. There are many different types of counselling, and what suits to one person will not suit to another, but if someone feels they might benefit from Counselling and can find the right Counselor for them, it could be a tremendous help in treating depression.

What is Counselling

Counselling is a type of taking treatment based on the interaction that takes place between the client and counselor. The essence of Counselling is that depression patients are not given advice, but helped to understand themselves better and find their own solutions. The Counselling session is often a really good opportunity for a depressive person to explore how they might think and act differently in a variety of situations, look at the past situations or to cope with difficult emotions like anger.

How Counselling help someone who is depressed?

Counselling can help most people - though it may not be appropriate where a person is severely depressed or suffering from a mental health disorder. Most effective help for the treatment of depression lasting less than a year is Counselling, either person-centered or cognitive therapy.

If the cause of depression is related to a specific event such as bereavement, or a specific problem such as difficulties with a particular relationship, then it can be particularly useful - where depression is of less than months duration, Counselling can be more effective and work more quickly, than antidepressants.
