Symptom of Bipolar Disorder, Bipolar Depression Sign and Symptoms - Manic Disorder

When a person suffers from bipolar depression, the signs as well as the symptoms include feeling constantly sad, anxious, guilty, and hopeless, sleep gets disturbed and appetite becomes reduced, a feeling of fatigue sets in and there is less interest in daily activities. The person with bipolar depression would also not be able to concentrate and feels irritable and there may also be chronic pain for which the cause may be unknown as well as the patient will also continually be thinking about suicide.

Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder and Manic Depression

In the depressive phase of manic depression, symptoms will be the same kind of mix as those anyone who has depression might have. In the manic phase, there will be -

Excessive highs of mood and energy - These can manifest in a wide variety of ways - for example, talking constantly or very fast to the point where sometimes it is difficult to understand what a person is saying, irritability or outbursts of strong emotion such as anger, working too long or too hard, devising outlandish schemes, impulsive behavior and loss of judgment - for example, making unrealistic plans, spending too much money or being over generous. In very severe cases, hallucinations may also occur.

Someone who as manic depression may not always realize they are in a manic phase, not at least because they literally feel on a high. The downside is that manic behavior can produce lots of undesirable behavior as well, and the person may afterwards be upset and shocked at things they have said and done.

Manic depression or bipolar disorder is sometimes associated with creativity. There is a long list of composers, artists and writers who are thought to have had manic depression.

Someone who has Bipolar Depression or manic disorder would be expected to alternate between a depressive state and a state of mania. For example -

  • increased activity
  • talkativeness
  • less need for sleep
  • racing thoughts and constant
  • often unachievable ideas
  • inflated self-esteem
  • bouts of generosity
  • irritability
  • impatience and risk taking

Other symptoms of Bipolar Depression can include forgetfulness, tearfulness, feelings of inadequacy, feeling hopeless about the future, loss of motivation, reduced care over personal hygiene and appearance, loss of sex drive, anxiety and worrying about health more than usual.

What are signs and symptom of mania (or a manic episode of bipolar disorder)?

Symptoms of mania (or a manic episode of bipolar disorder) include:

  • Increased energy, activity, and restlessness
  • Excessively "high," overly good, euphoric mood
  • Extreme irritability
  • Racing thoughts and talking very fast, jumping from one idea to another
  • Distractibility, can't concentrate well
  • Little sleep needed
  • Unrealistic beliefs in one's abilities and powers
  • Poor judgment
  • Spending sprees
  • A lasting period of behavior that is different from usual
  • Increased sexual drive
  • Abuse of drugs, particularly cocaine, alcohol, and sleeping medications
  • Provocative, intrusive, or aggressive behavior denial that anything is wrong

What are signs and symptoms of depressive episode of bipolar disorder?

Signs and symptoms of depression (or a depressive episode of bipolar disorder) include:

  • Lasting sad, anxious, or empty mood
  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed, including sex
  • Decreased energy, a feeling of fatigue or of being "slowed down"
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, making decisions
  • Restlessness or irritability
  • Sleeping too much, or can't sleep
  • Change in appetite and/or unintended weight loss or gain
  • Chronic pain or other persistent bodily symptoms that are not caused by physical illness or injury
  • Thoughts of death or suicide, or suicide attempts
