Anxiety disorder - Anxiety Symptoms, Causes, Treatment, Anxiety Attack Medication

Anxiety is a very common psychological problem. Anxiety often accompanies depression and may be the more important component of someone's illness. Anxiety is in part a normal and necessary part of our psychological make-up. Being anxious about crossing a busy street etc. heightens our awareness of the risks involved.

When Anxiety becomes a problem or an illness it is because it lasts too long or the symptoms of Anxiety are more severe. Anxiety is twice as common in women as in men and may occur in adults at any age.

Generalized Anxiety disorder is approximately present in 4.6 percent of women and 4.3 percent of men. Mixed Anxiety and depressive disorder is also present. For many people who experience an anxiety problem, it is mild and they manage to cope without professional help for others the problem is intense, distressing and incapaciting.

Types of Anxiety Disorder

There are six different types anxiety disorder. Each anxiety disorder has its own distinct features, but they are all bound together by the common theme of excessive, irrational fear and dread.

Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a relatively rare disorder characterized by recurrent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and/or repetitive behaviors (compulsions).
Anxiety Disorder NOS Anxiety Disorder NOS
Acute stress disorder Acute Stress Disorder is a anxiety disorder that develops within one month after a severe traumatic event or experience. 
Phobic Anxiety Disorders Phobia disorder is common in the general population.Specific Phobia , Social Phobia , Agoraphobia, Animal phobias, Blood and injury phobias
Stress Related Disorders There are a number of psychological consequences to major stressful events and these often include symptoms of anxiety.
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD is a person's intense, lengthy and sometimes delayed reaction to a stressful event.
Panic Anxiety Disorder, with or without agoraphobia Panic disorder is common in depression, GAD or agoraphobia.
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) Generalized Anxiety Disorder can be caused by physical illness such as an over-active thyroid gland or result from the emotional response to a serious illness such as a heart attack.

 

Anxiety and Depression

There are several reasons why Anxiety and depression may co-exist. Difficulties in childhood leading to unpleasant life experiences are associated with both depression and anxiety in adult life - in other words there is a common cause in some people. Depression tends to be associated with loss and anxiety with threat, but many situation have elements of both.

Long lasting Anxiety on its own increases the tendency of people to become depressed. Anxiety may also be symptom of a depressive illness.
